About Us
Founded in 2007 by musicians and music
educators Jenifer Gelineau, Benjamin Van Vliet, and Carolyn Walker, Red
Oak Strings seeks to enrich the musical lives of young string players
through small ensemble playing and building fundamental musicianship
skills.
Over the course of week-long summer programs and in our school year
chamber music programs, we explore the skills of
music-making including listening and communication, pulse, rhythm, and
ear training. Mastery of these skills enables a person to explore the
emotions and ideas that
make playing music exciting and fun. In addition to learning music,
students learn
about the music in order understand its roots and to write program
notes for their concert.
Another aspect of Red Oak Strings is bringing together string players
across age groups. At the end of each day in our summer programs,
everybody gathers to
rehearse a large group piece. In the large group the more experienced
students learn how to lead and the younger students get the chance to
see what they can achieve if they work hard.
